Child’s Passport Affidavit: A Guide for Parents in Australia

When your child is in India and you are living in Australia, arranging their Indian passport can feel complicated. Parental consent, supporting documents and the correct attestation may all be needed before an application can be processed.

Through iVacs Australia, support is provided with understanding the requirements and preparing the paperwork for your circumstances.

What Is a Parental Affidavit?

A parental affidavit is a written statement through which consent is given for a passport to be issued to a child. It may be required for a first passport or a passport reissue, often called a renewal.

When a parent lives in Australia, the prescribed affidavit is used to confirm that no objection is raised to the child’s passport application. The required attestation must be completed before the document is submitted.

What If Both Parents Are in Australia?

Under the published Australian service checklist, separate affidavits are required from each parent when both parents are in Australia.

For the child’s application in India, a local guardian must also be appointed. Passport India’s guidance specifies a joint sworn affidavit attested by the Indian Mission or Post abroad. Supporting affidavits from two responsible people are also required unless the appointed guardian is a grandparent.

The Australian affidavit requirements and the local guardian requirements should be checked together. Authority to submit the application should not be assumed simply because a relative is looking after the child. Passport India guidance

Documents Required for the Affidavit in Australia

The following documents are listed in the published Australian checklist:

  • A completed and signed Miscellaneous Service application form.
  • The prescribed parental affidavit, attested by a Justice of the Peace or Notary Public.
  • Two attested copies of the applying parent’s current passport.
  • One recent photograph measuring 2 × 2 inches.

For NSW residents, attestation by a Notary Public is specified.

If the parent is an Australian citizen, the affidavit must be apostilled by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) before submission to the application centre. Further documents may be requested by the Indian High Commission or Consulate.

The child’s birth certificate, existing passport and any custody or guardianship documents should also be kept ready for checking the requirements in India.
